Spokesman Vusi Mabanga said the accident happened at 7am on the N12 between the Holfontein and Springs off-ramps.
"The injured were taken to different hospitals around the area. Most of the seriously injured passengers were trapped (inside the vehicle) and had to be freed with the jaws of life.
"One passenger was declared dead on the scene," he said.
According to Mabanga, a witness said a wheel came off the speeding taxi, causing it to overturn several times before it landed on its roof.
The N12 freeway was closed for two hours.
