The Gauteng Handball Association will stage a one-day senior tournament at the Wembley Indoor Arena in Johannesburg tomorrow.

The tournament, the first of its kind to be held this season, starts at 8am and will finish late in the afternoon.

It will be contested by 14 teams, 10 men and four women's sides.

The tournament will also be used by the organisation to select their provincial teams for the coming national championships in Port Elizabeth in July.

The association's president, Gunther Schafer, said they were expecting an exciting tournament because teams had been training hard for the event.

He said they had acquired the services of Rapule Thebiane from Kagiso to coach the Gauteng provincial squad.

Thebiane is the only active South African handball coach with an international B licence from Leipzig University in Germany.

"He joined us four weeks ago and he will be at the tournament to make some selections with his technical staff.

"Competition among the teams is very high and almost every player is eager to represent Gauteng in the national championships.

Teams that will be taking part are:

Men: Falcons, Soweto Hearts, German School of Pretoria, German School of Johannesburg, Tshwane University, Correctional Services (Johannesburg), Embalenhle, Katlehong, Daveyton and Kagiso Magic Stars.

Women: Correctional Services (Sun City), Tshwane University, Cheetahs and Dobsonville.
