I am 15 years old and obese. I feel self-conscious and would rather not go out at all.

I have some wonderful friends, but I am sure that they must be embarrassed to be seen in public with me because I look so awkward.

I have tried to go on a diet and to exercise, but I have not been able to keep it up. I manage to lose a few kilos but they come back

I want to be like my friends and fit into nice clothing.

Please help me.

There is so much pressure on young women to look thin and beautiful. The reality is that no one is perfect. Everyone has something that they would like to change about their bodies. Perhaps your starting point should be to consult a doctor.

Explain that you would like to lose some weight and ensure that there are no medical reasons for your weight.

If possible, ask the doctor to give you an eating guideline to follow. Otherwise you can go to a library and get a book on nutrition. Strict diets are not successful.

Eat sensibly and your diet should include fresh fruit and vegetables. Change to low fat yogurt, milk and cheese. Eat small quantities of carbohydrates (potato, pasta, rice and bread).

Avoid fried or processed foods. Don't just weigh yourself but take your measurements and check them every week.

Always remember that looks are not everything. Your family and friends love you because of the person you are. Ask them for their support.
