A 17th century Chinese encyclopaedia gives the first known reference to a toothbrush, which was invented in about 1498. It has bristles at right angles to the handle. "Chew sticks" had been used to clean teeth since 3000 BCE. -The Book of Firsts, compiled by Ian Harrison and Peter Joyce
