The Child Justice Alliance (CJA) said media reports that there is an increase in crimes committed by children were misleading and incorrect.

Jacqueline Gallinetti, CJA spokesman, said there was no evidence that crimes by children were on the rise.

CJA is a network of non-governmental organisations, academic institutions and individuals working to ensure that the Child Justice Bill is passed.

Gallinetti was reacting to statistics presented to the portfolio committee on justice and constitutional development last week.

"When the statistics were presented to the committee, they were told that they were not verified. We do not have statistics to compare them with," Gallinetti said.

She said accurate statistics on children in the criminal justice system had been a problem since the 1990s.
