The culture of impunity and untouchability that has characterised the country's taxi business - and irked helpless commuters no end - is thankfully being challenged at last.

The culture of impunity and untouchability that has characterised the country's taxi business - and irked helpless commuters no end - is thankfully being challenged at last.

Commuters are no longer prepared to be beholden to a sector that had become arrogant because of the lack of viable alternative transport .

Not only had the taxi sector chosen to bite the hand that feeds them but also to demand the other limb to sink its teeth into as well.

With the backing of the police the public is slowly forcing taximen to account for their rogue actions.

The tough lesson began this week with the arrest of two taximen for attacking a Johannesburg woman this week.

It's a bitter pill that should yield sweet results for all.
