Commuters from Amanzimtoti to Durban were diverted through Moss Kolnik Drive, then Kingsway and on to Prospecton.

lIn late February the Transport Department warned motorists to steer clear of the M4 between Umdloti and Umhlanga because the road was "sinking" and had been closed. KwaZulu-Natal authorities said they couldn't explain why the road was sinking, but said engineers were "working on the problem".

A motorist who uses the M4 said: "It has potholes that could swallow a car."

lLast year an Eastern Cape motorist won a claim against Buffalo City for damages caused by a pothole.

Eddie Opperman, 53, took his fight for compensation to the East London small claims court, which ordered the municipality to pay him R2100 in compensation.

lA large pothole on the road between Lydenburg and Steelpoort - there for four years - claimed a second victim in December.

Nico Horn, 58, of Welkom, died instantly after the front tyres of his bakkie burst when he hit the giant pothole. Police confirmed that another man had died at the same spot after his vehicle hit the same pothole.
