Norman Dlomo says his aim is to win as many races as possible to put him in the right frame of mind ahead of the Beijing Olympics in August.
The 32-year-old athlete was speaking to Sowetan after winning the Nedbank Matha 21km Series in Seshego on Saturday in 1:03; 31. Shadrack Hoff posted 1:4:20 when winning the race last year.
The hard-running Dlomo also used the event to prepare for the Rotterdam Marathon in Holland next month.
"I'm encouraged by winning this race today (Saturday) and I'm looking forward to doing well in the Rotterdam Marathon. It will not be an easy race but I will pull out all stops not to disappoint my country," Dlomo said.
Jabulane Gwebu came second in a time of 1:04;17 and was followed home by third-positioned Zimbabwean Luwis Masundu (1:04;46).
Zimbabwean Tabitha Tsatsa, 35, took the women's laurels when she breasted the tape in the time of 1:15;31.
Tsatsa beat her closest rival Louisa Leballo by 11 seconds, with another Zimbabwean Sharon Tavenga obtaining third position on 1:18;35.
Limpopo Athletics' president Kakata Maponyane was impressed with the turnout of the athletes and also thanked Athletics South Africa (ASA) for affording them another opportunity of hosting the series.
"Hosting an event of this magnitude will go a long way in developing athletics in the province," Maponyane said.
Said ASA's president Leonard Chuene: "It is our commitment to ensure that we develop athletics across the country and also help in the nurturing of raw talent which is in abundance in our provinces."
