More than 300 residents of Kagiso in Mogale City on the West Rand took to the streets to highlight their dissatisfaction over the slow pace of housing delivery in the area.
The placard-carrying protesters walked more than 10km from Kagiso police station to deliver a memorandum to Municipality officials at the civic centre.
The march was organised by the Concerned Homeless People, a civic organisation.
According to the chairperson of the organisation, Ntemi Cakwebe and the leader of the march, the protest was triggered by the slow pace of the delivery, and the allocation of houses to non-residents of Mogale City.
"We are bona fide residents of Mogale City yet we do not have our own houses. Some of us have been on the waiting list since 1994. What encouraged and provoked the residents is the slow pace of housing delivery in Mogale City," said Cakwebe.
The message on some of the placards was directed at Gauteng housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane.
Some of the placards read, "Nomvula charity begins at home", "Councillors stop selling RDP houses to "Nomvula, you are from Kagiso but you are not supporting us".
The city's Speaker, Noluthando Mangole, received the memorandum on behalf of the executive mayor Koketso Calvin Seerane. She promised to respond.
"We have received your memorandum and we promise to respond to your demands within the stipulated period," Mangole said.
