Cops raid Soweto hawkers

Hawkers trading next to Dobsonville Shopping Centre in Soweto are crying foul after the Johannesburg Metro Police removed them from the site yesterday.

The 34 JMPD officers who came in six vans confiscated four containers of goods belonging to about 200 hawkers.

"I am shocked by this raid because last month we had a meeting with Metro Trading Company, JMPD and other stakeholders in which we discussed our trading in this area," said Michael More, chairman of Dobsonville Hawkers Association.

Mother of three Nompumelelo Mazibuko, 38, one of the hawkers, described the police raid as unfair.

But JMPD spokesman Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said that hawkers were warned about the using the area.

"That area is going to be used for a housing project and a taxi rank, so they are obstructing the process," said Minnaar. - Penwell Dlamini
