The search is on for five volunteer coordinators for the 2009 Confederations Cup, the 2010 Local Organising Committee has announced.

"The volunteer coordinators will operate from the five host cities for the Confederations Cup," said Dennis Mumble, the LOC's chief competitions officer.

"We will only start with the process of recruiting volunteers for the tournament once we have hired the five coordinators."

The LOC are planning to recruit 5 000 and 15 000 volunteers for the Confederations Cup and the World Cup, respectively.

In other countries hosting major sports competitions, experts in various fields such as doctors, nurses, lawyers, accountants and journalists work as volunteers.

Some of them serve as ushers, drivers, translators, team guides and interpreters.

Asked when we will the LOC be starting to recruit the volunteers, Mumble said: "We are looking at July 1 but we will make a public announcement.

Onke Mjo is in charge of the volunteer programme section at the LOC.

For a person to qualify as a volunteer, he or she must be 18 years by March 2009 for the Confederations Cup and March 2010 for the World Cup. One of the sponsors of the World Cup will be responsible for recruiting and placing ball boys and girls, flag bearers and player guides under 18 years.

You must also live in the respective host city - Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Polokwane, Pretoria, Nelspruit and Rustenburg. There will be no pay for the volunteers but they will be given travel allowance, training for the two tournaments and a World Cup uniform.
