Afriforum Youth yesterday rejected the proposed schools pledge, saying it was not in the interests of the country's youth .

In an open letter to the Department of Education, the organisation said the majority of South African youths opposed the pledge.

"A poll conducted on the web page of the ANC Youth League indicated that 64 percent of the respondents felt that the pledge is not the right way to promote patriotism," said Afriforum Youth chairman Ernst Roets in a statement.

Roets said the proposed pledge was a mere reflection of the ANC's ideological outlook.

In response, Department of Education spokesman Lunga Ngqengelele said: "They are welcome to oppose the pledge, but we have gazetted March 20 for public comment on the proposed pledge.

"We might have to extend the time if the comments we receive require that. The department will respond in time to the public comment." - Sapa
