Role for legends

The 2010 World Cup Government Unit plans to use the Bafana Bafana squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations to assist in the development of soccer.

The 2010 World Cup Government Unit plans to use the Bafana Bafana squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations to assist in the development of soccer.

It will also be part of the 2010 Fifa World Cup awareness campaign.

"We are talking about the Class of 96 legends such as Lucas Radebe, Mark Fish, Phil Masinga and many others who made us proud by lifting the continental title.

"There is no doubt that the Class of 96 are still the best ever Bafana Bafana squad to date. They played with commitment and put South Africa on the international map that is why we feel there is a need by the country to use them effectively in our plans to develop soccer.

"We will use them to conduct coaching clinics in all the nine provinces.

Our legends will also conduct motivational talks for youngsters to take soccer seriously. It is good that most of them are already involved in the game at the development level, while others are serving the Local Organising Committee as ambassadors."

Details will be announced in due course.
