A donkey herder charged with stabbing to death his 7-month-year-old son was denied bail yesterday at the Boschfontein magistrate's court.
Muntu Dannies Nkambule appeared before magistrate Edgar Moletsane who postponed the case to April 29, pending further police investigations.
Nkambule was not asked to plead to a charge of murder and the attempted murder of his wife.
His baby son had knife wounds in his stomach and chest and died immediately, police said.
The attack took place at Nkambule's home at Boschfontein, near Malelane, in Mpumalanga, at the weekend.
Police said a "love triangle" triggered off the attacks.
Constable Nompilo Qwabe, who is based in Schoemansdal, said that an argument broke out when Nkambule's wife, Rebecca Lubisi, wanted to go home to Langeloop Trust some 15km away to visit her parents.
The 23-year-old husband suspected that Lubisi had a lover waiting for her there, Qwabe said.
Before allegedly killing his son, Nkambule allegedly stabbed his wife in the head.
She was later admitted to Shongwe Hospital.
Local residents told Sowetan they had come to court to ensure that Nkambule would not get bail.
The suspect also tried to stab a police officer trying to arrest him but was shot in his leg and was also admitted to Shongwe Hospital.
He was discharged into police custody on Monday.
