I am concerned about the worrying regularity and frequency of such cases. It's a big question mark hanging over the type of leadership we have.
The list of leadership failures is growing by the day. There is the Jackie Selebi saga, the rot at the Land Bank, Travelgate scam, corruption and nepotism at local government level and so on.
Is this a reflection of the character flaws, of the post1994 leaders? Or does the fault lie with the nation's unrealistic expectations?
The answer lies somewhere in between. I am not saying leaders should be angels. I accept that mistakes are part of life.
But you will agree that such serious allegations being levelled at senior people are a source of concern.
These are former freedom fighters with presumed high moral standards. Or is this a case of their true colours being exposed at last? Personally I am disappointed!
For a start, people like McBride and Selebi knew very well they would be under the microscope in their new positions. Their conduct should be beyond reproach.
To most South Africans, these leaders had to be different from the Nat leadership. Hence these high expectations
