Former Miss South Africa Amy Kleinhans-Curd, pictured, has joined the list of extra ordinary women vying for the Shoprite/Checkers/SABC2 Woman of the Year award as nominations for this year's winner get under way.
The awards have been held every year for the past 13 years. They recognise and cele- brate the achievement of South African women who work tirelessly to make a difference in their communities.
Kleinhans-Curd has been nominated in the education category. She has been involved in the teaching profession since 1991 and is the director of the Dial-a-Teacher organisation.
Her organisation, which was launched in 2000 with the help of other professional teachers, helps pupils telephonically with their homework.
Last year's overall winner of this prestigious award was health practitioner-turned-farmer Linda Olga Nghatsane who scooped the prize for her dedication in ridding her community in Nelspruit of poverty.
Nghatsane turned an open space into a thriving farm as an answer to her community's poverty and unemployment problems. Her farm has a yearly turnover of more than R2million.
This year, the organisers have again called on South Africans to help in the search for a phenomenal woman by nominating her in the following categories: business entrepreneur; health; education; social welfare; arts, culture and communications; sport and science and technology.
The launch was attended by influential role models, including the ANC's treasurer-general Mathews Phosa.
The closing date for entries is May 9 and entry forms may be obtained from any Shoprite or Checkers stores or at the SABC offices. They can also be downloaded from www.womanoftheyear.co.za.
