Staff should be aware of the implications of their behaviour. There were numerous solutions despite problems of budget and space.
There was not enough understanding of the pain and humiliation caused by procedures that divide people according to race. Management should not have allowed the situation to develop and should have prevented the racial discrimination.
What bothers me most is the use of different toilets, lack of bedding and separating people because of their skin colour. I am sure that the residents would have accepted the situation if the logistical problems affected all of them, and not only one group.
If it meant that whites had to do without some of the luxuries, so be it. A solution for the bedding could have been found with a bit of creative thinking. Many people would donate for a worthy cause like this.
The problem of racism is a lot deeper. Racism is alive in our country and racists have no idea how much pain and humiliation they cause.
It is no wonder that we are failing as a nation to make this country great. As long as we are afraid to take a stand and reach out to one another, we will not succeed. Let us bury the hatchet. Just imagine what we can achieve in South Africa if we unite as a nation.
