Police must ensure that they have enough evidence that could lead to a conviction before they arrest and detain a suspect.

Police must ensure that they have enough evidence that could lead to a conviction before they arrest and detain a suspect.

The arrest of a suspected serial killer linked to the gruesome deaths of 13 children at Phahameng in Modimolle, Limpopo, in January had brought relief and hope to residents that this monster had at last been arrested after a four-year reign of terror.

Lo and behold! Charges against the man were dropped this week because subsequent DNA tests on the victims could not link him to the crimes. The villagers are now again living in fear.

Police must make up for this bungle by launching a proper investigation that could lead to the arrest of the real suspect.
