A police sergeant from Orange Farm narrowly escaped injury on Monday night when one of three armed men fired two shots at him.

Luckily they missed, but a Pakistani tuckshop owner, who the men had earlier allegedly robbed and shot, later died in hospital.

Sergeant Pule Letsoele was on patrol in Orange Farm at 6pm in a marked police van when he was shot at.

"Letsoele had just dropped off some reservists at their homes when an armed robber fired shots at him," said police spokesman Keke Motsiri.

Two bullets struck the police vehicle but missed Letsoele. Motsiri said the gunman was one of three robbers who had earlier robbed the Pakistani tuck-shop owner, who has not yet been identified.

"The robber probably thought someone had alerted the police. He came out of the shop and shot at Letsoele," Motsiri said.

He gave chase on foot, but the robbers split up and escaped. One dropped a cellphone. The police have opened cases of murder, attempted murder and malicious damage to state property.
