North West police are confident the net is closing in on an accomplice after the rape, torture with a hot steam iron and murder of a 61-year-old.

Superintendent Keaobaka Moses said the woman was attacked in her home at Ottoshop, 20km outside Mafikeng, last Wednesday night.

"It appears the attackers entered through an unlocked back door. They raped and tortured the woman before murdering her," said Moses.

Her body was found with stab wounds in the stomach and showed extensive burn marks.

One of her alleged assailants is already behind bars but his accomplice is still on the run.

Moses said it was "just a matter of time" before the other perpetrator was arrested because he was known to the community.

lPolice have appealed to the community of Itsoseng and surrounding villages to help them identify the body of a woman, also slain last Wednesday.

The woman was attacked in the early hours just a few kilometres from Itsoseng police station. It is the second murder on the same stretch of road within a year.

Captain Leboagang Mokgothu said the woman was wearing dark jeans and a blue T-shirt.

"Anyone with information can come forward and we promise to protect their identities," Mokgothu said.
