Choosing Van Schalkwyk is an insult to blacks

Sowetan has always had a very clear editorial policy of neutral reporting and nation building across our divided society.

Last week Mpumalanga's rugby union selected Gert van Schalkwyk for its provincial team.

He is one of Waterkloof Four racist murderers found guilty of brutally beating a homeless black man to death and severely injuring another.

Regardless of the technicality that Schalkwyk can be selected while appealing his sentence, the rugby bosses' shocking action is an insult to the dignity of all black people.

When Makhaya Ntini was wrongly accused of rape he was immediately suspended until his name was cleared.

Rugby is notorious for a bungling management that is prone to point-scoring statements, but perhaps in this case they selfishly don't want to alienate voting blocks in the coming office bearer's elections by condemning this rotten selection.

I appeal to your newspaper to publish these e-mail addresses so that readers can exercise their democratic right to call for Van Schalkwyk to be kicked into touch and dropped from the team.

E-mail, write to or telephone Saru. E-mail its president Oregon Hoskins at hoskins@sarugby.com or its vice-president Mike Stofile at mikes@sarugby.com.

Reclaim African dignity by speaking out so that South Africans of all hues can join hands after being empowered.
