A 19-year-old black youth accused of murdering a white Swartruggens resident has appeared in court, North West police said yesterday.

Spokesman Superintendent Lesego Metsi said it was very quiet outside the Rustenburg magistrate's court.

"There are no protests, it is quiet," he said.

It is alleged that on July 13 2006 the youth and two accomplices entered a smallholding in Swartruggens.

They robbed the family of electrical appliances and poured boiling water over the owner. He later died of burn wounds.

The youth has yet to plead. - Sapa
