The Vaal University of Technology will today confer an honorary doctorate in applied sciences on Science Minister Mosibudi Mangena.

The university said the honour was in recognition of Mangena's "services and contribution to the social upliftment of our region and the country".

Mangena matriculated at Hebron Training Institute in 1969 before enrolling for a BSc at the University of Zululand in 1970.

His university education was disrupted by his political activities as a black consciousness movement activist.

He completed a BSc and a BSc honours (cum laude) through Unisa while imprisoned on Robben Island. He also holds an MSc in applied Mathematics.

Mangena has written four books: On Your Own; A Quest for True Humanity; A Twin World and My Grandmother is Permanent.
