Criminals are now targeting pensioners for their meagre monthly grants in Mpumalanga.

This follows the killing of at least two pensioners in two separate incidents in which criminals were trying to rob them of their cash.

In the latest incident, the neighbours of Sophie Louisa Sambo, 66, at KaNyamazane near Nelspruit were hit by a foul smell coming from a nearby pit toilet prompting them to investigate on Saturday.

They found her decomposed body covered with a blanket in the pit toilet.

Police investigations revealed that the woman had been strangled to death.

Further investigations led to the arrest of Sambo's neighbour, a man in his early twenties. He had allegedly demanded cash from Sambo.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane yesterday said the suspect allegedly strangled Sambo with his bare hands before dragging her body into the pit toilet.

He said the man used his own blanket to cover her body. He is expected to appear in court today.

In another incident, three people were arrested for suffocating an 84-year-old pensioner to death in front of his wife on Thursday last week, Bushbuckridge police spokesman Inspector Nyiko Maluleleke, said.

The men aged 18, 19 and 21 were arrested in Motibidi in Bushbuckridge on Sunday.
