The ANC yesterday dismissed reports that it had called on President Thabo Mbeki to come clean about his involvement in the controversial arms deal.

"The ANC wants to place on record that the statements contained in the newspaper reports do not reflect what was actually said," a stement says.

The ANC statement follows media reports that business mogul and senior ANC member Tokyo Sexwale had called on Mbeki to clarify his involvement in the arms deal.

Yesterday the party said that Sexwale had only called on ANC leaders to monitor the coverage of the arms deal by the German media.

German authorities are investigating allegations that arms giant Thyssen Krupp bribed South African officials and politicians to land a contract for warships.

Mbeki has come under pressure to come clean about his alleged involvement in the arms deal.

On Sunday the DA and ID called on Mbeki to deal with allegations of corruption around the arms deal.

The Mail and Guardian on Friday said Mbeki and several ANC officials were suspected of having received bribes from arms manufacturers.
