South Africa's leading funnyman, Shonisani "DJ Shabba" Muleya, was at his hilarious best at the launch of the Smart Young Mindz Challenge in Kliptown, Soweto, this week.
While keeping dignitaries and pupils giggling, Muleya paused after each wisecrack to drop motivational pearls.
Young people who did not study would only be worth the money they earned from begging or doing menial jobs, he said.
"You need to have a dream and it can be fulfilled if you are educated and remain determined, dedicated and ambitious," Muleya, who is also an engineer, said.
By staying focused and working hard he has had his own television show, a compilation CD of his skits, and is co- owner of an independent radio station in Limpopo.
The top three groups of five pupils stand to win:
l First Prize - R50000; R8000 cash to each team member, a cellphone worth R1000 and R5000 for their school;
l Second Prize - R30000; R4000 cash to each team member, a cellphone worth R1000 and R5000 for their school;
l Third Prize - R20000; R2000 cash to each team member, a cellphone worth R1000, and R5000 for their school.
