Musiyiaa cautions Motau

Former Zimbabwean boxing champion Farai "Sonny Payne" Musiyiaa has fireworks in store for Khotso Motau when they meet in a super middleweight bout over eight rounds.

There is little chance of there being a damp fuse, as these are two of the few proficient fighters in the super middleweight division.

Musiyiaa, 27, who fights out of Fourways under trainer Steve Castle, intends to impress local promoters.

He says a good win will open new doors for him.

On the other hand Motau, 26, cannot afford to lose because that could jeopardise his chances of fighting for the vacant SA super middleweight title.

He has already been approved by Boxing SA to oppose Tshepang Mohale for that title that was relinquished by William Gare last month after winning the World Boxing Foundation belt.

"I am a nobody here," said Musiyiaa. "I only have my trainer, Steve, and that's it. But a good win could change my life here for the better."

Musiyiaa gave an enthusiastic performance against Rupert van Aswegen at Emperors Palace in September last year.

The fight was declared a draw, which was Musiyiaa's first against 17 wins (10 KOs ) and nine defeats.

"Khotso is a good boxer and I believe that I am a good boxer too - so we will see who is the best."

But Motau, the hard-hitting left-handed former Olympian, refused to be drawn into a verbal sparring bout.

"I know what I want," was all he would say.

Motau, whose skills are honed by Stanely Ndlovu in downtown Johannesburg, is yet to lose a fight in a local ring after 11 wins.

His last defeat was in Canada in July last year against Shawn Garnett.

But the super fit Motau bounced back and chalked up an impressive win against Gabonese Stephen Nzuemba.
