Minister warns road users

Transport Minister Jeff Radebe has warned motorists and pedestrians to be extra careful on the roads during the Easter holidays or face jail, stiff penalties or death.

Radebe was speaking during the official opening of the Boyne Road, near Moria, outside Polokwane.

The R95million road was part of the R9,2billion that the government has put aside for infrastructure development, including roads.

He said the law would be tough on road users who did not obey road and traffic rules. He said his department would increase the number of traffic officers on the country's roads in general during the holidays.

Traffic between Polokwane and Boyne is also expected to increase substantially because thousands of worshippers would be heading to Moria for their annual pilgrimage.

This year's message is: "Be part of the solution: Road safety begins with you," Radebe added.
