FALLEN WALL KILLS BABY

An Umlazi township two- year-old died after a retaining wall collapsed on the three-roomed house she was sleeping in during a vicious storm.

The storm, which wreaked havoc in Durban this week, has left motorists and homeowners with huge repair bills.

Lusanda Khuzwayo was sleeping while her mother, Nokwanda Khuzwayo, 24, tried to mop up the water that had flooded the room.

Suddenly a retaining wall behind the house collapsed on to the wall of the room where little Lusanda was sleeping.

Neighbours who came running to help Khuzwayo dug away the building rubble until they found Lusanda's tiny body.

The child was certified dead on arrival at the hospital after the child's uncle, Mbuso, had frantically driven there for help.

Yesterday victims of the storm gathered at the Emaweleni community hall to receive food parcels and blankets from department of social development MEC Meshack Radebe, pictured.

He has committed his department to pay the funeral costs for the child and to help the rest of the community rebuild their homes.

He said he would also assist the family to rebuild the house that Khuzwayo lost in the flood.

Khuzwayo said she was relieved that she could bury her baby with dignity. This helped her cope with her loss.

"I am grateful for the help offered," she said.

"It's in times like this that we need each other and I am glad that I have people who are prepared to hold my hand during this dark time."
