Apart from its abundant mineral resources, South Africa's technological prowess makes it the envy even of some developed countries in the world.

That said, however, it is hard to reconcile the current archaic methods of paying pensioners used by government agencies with the country's modern technology.

At best, these methods are fraught with security risks as shown in Durban on Tuesday, when armed robbers stormed a pension payout point, shot a granny and a security guard before escaping with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The long pension queues in the scorching heat starkly contrast with modern times.
