Jubilation was the order of the day yesterday when Limpopo education MEC Aaron Motsoaledi gave donations to heads of shools for the disabled in the province.
Motsoaledi gave 27 schools with special needs donations ranging from information technology equipment and vehicles to other school aids.
The donations are aimed at assisting the schools in performing their daily functions more quickly and efficiently.
About four schools asked premier Sello Moloto to donate vehicles that would enable them to transport pupils to and from schools daily.
Four of the minibuses were handed over yesterday to the beneficiaries at the Mowaneng village.
Motsoaledi said the Premier believed that "vulnerable" groups such as the disabled should be at the centre of government programmes.
"We urge all school managers, teachers and pupils to make sure the equipment given to them is not vandalised," Motsoaledi said.
He encouraged communities to report any kind of vandalism and misuse of the facilities to the police.
"This is like Christmas in March to me," said a tearful Florence Dzhalagome, principal of the Grace and Love Special School in Thohoyandou.
"I feel like a small child who wants jump, laugh and dance for joy.
"I never imagined that my school would ever have a car of its own.
"This is now a reality, thanks to the government,"
Dzhalagome said for many years parents were forced to dig deep into their pockets to pay exorbitant fees so that their children could get to school.
Most of the parents in the area are poor and depend on government grants for survival.
"As a result some of them were forced to withdraw their children from the school," she said.
