Top South African runner Hendrick Ramaala is planning a major assault on the 10000m race in Stellenbosch tomorrow night.
Ramaala is one of the big names who will be in action at the Yellow Pages South African Track and Field Championships that ends on Saturday.
Speaking after a training session at Zoo Lake yesterday, Ramaala said: "We are training at Zoo Lake on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and weekends if there are no activities, working on long runs.
"On Mondays and Wednesdays, we do speed training at Wits athletics stadium.
"I train with a lot of determined youngsters. The good thing is that they are in good shape.
"For me it is part of the build-up to the London Marathon, which is on track. I will try and help those who want to qualify for the Olympics in the 10 000."
Despite the absence of world record holder Haile Gebresellasie of Ethiopia and Kenyan Paul Tergat, Ramaala said the London race will be a tough one.
"Expect fireworks, all the guys who finished in the top five last year are back, including the winner [Martin Lel of Kenya]."
Moroccan Goumri Abderrahim, who finished second last year, Kenyan Felix Limo (third) and Moroccan Jaquad Gharib (fourth) will also take part. Ramaala was fifth.
"For me the bigger picture this year is the Beijing Olympics in August. ]I have been training hard and the plan is to win a medal for my country," said Ramaala.
Meanwhile, the Gauteng department of sports, arts, culture and recreation will celebrate Human Right's Day with a 5km fun race in Sharpeville on March 15.
Also involved in the event is the Sedibeng Municipality and Athletics Vaal. Politicians Barbara Creecy, Mlungisi Hlongwane and Dikeledi Tsotetsi will also compete.
It will start at 8am at Kgomotso Primary School and finish at George Thabe Stadium. Entrance is free and participants will receive T-shirts and medals.
