Mystery surrounds the death of a 17-year-old teenager who was found hanging in police cells in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, a day after he was arrested for car hijacking.

Police said Quinton Rousseau committed suicide shortly after a routine cell visit.

Police spokesman superintendent Henry Budhram said the teenager was alone in the cell where he was found dead.

He said police on duty discovered the body at about 6pm.

"He wrapped his trousers around his neck to commit suicide."

Budhram said the deceased was arrested in Durban on Friday and taken to Pietermaritzburg, where he was suppose to appear in court on Monday. He said an inquest docket had been opened.
