Popular Lesedi FM presenter Thuso Motaung wanted Power Mix to pay money directly into his personal account rather than into that of a company of which he was joint director with a friend.
Power Mix distributor Costa Macropolus told the Johannesburg commercial crimes court in cross-examination yesterday that Motaung had instructed him to deposit his share of the proceeds from the sale of the product directly into his account.
Motaung, his wife Mamontha, and business partner Joshua Ramme are on trial for fraud. They are alleged to have defrauaded the SABC of R32 million.
Macropolus told the court that he originally paid money into the account of the company JR Business Analysts (JR), owned by Ramme and Motaung. He paid R2,50 for every Power Mix packet sold and R1 went to the SABC for social responsibility.
Following instructions from Motaung, he started paying an extra R2,50 into his account.
Macropolus said he didn't tell Ramme about the arrangement because he thought Motaung had done so.
The agreement stated that the broadcaster would receive R1 for each packet sold and the money would go to social responsibility programmes.
During cross examination by Ramme's advocate, Nardus Grove, Macropolus admitted he did not keep sales records.
Everything "was done telephonically". Motaung, JR Business Analysts and the SABC relied on him to provide the number of packets sold because he was the only one who had the figures. Macropolus contradicted himself several times.
"I'm making mistakes because I think faster than I talk," he said.
He also used another company to distribute the product without telling JR and Motaung.
