The three-day Sunday School Convention of the AME Church held in Daveyton, Springs, at the weekend was a great success.
The convention was attended by more than 200 children from four centres around Ekurhuleni. It was hosted by the local branch of the AME Church, under Reverend Nelson Mathekgoa.
The convention also served as a platform for Reverend Tsele Sidney Setai, presiding elder and bishop administrative assistant, to officially announce his relocation to the Wilberforce and Vaal district next month.
In a moving farewell sermon, Setai said the 13 years he and his wife Matshepo had spent as presiding elders and spiritual leaders at this 19th episcopal district of the church were fulfilling and a great privilege.
"Now the time has come for us to move forward where God sends us. This convention is the last in the quardrennium where we meet as a district," Setai said.
"We do not know what the future holds for us, but one thing we know is that we know who holds the future.
"He is the one who holds the keys of our lives.
"As we close this quadrennium, we want to thank you for contributing to our mental, spiritual and personal growth. We are standing firm because of you," Setai added.
In his heart-rendering sermon, based on Luke Chapter 8: 22-25, Setai recalled how Jesus had calmed the storm while he and his disciples were in a boat crossing from one side of the lake to the other.
"The Bible tells us that as they sailed, Jesus had fallen asleep. A windstorm came down on the lake and the boat started filling up with water. Seeing this, the disciples woke him up, but, Jesus rebuked them, saying, 'Where is your faith?'"
Setai added that even to this day, the Christian community still faced storms in their everyday lives.
"In your lives there are storms of poverty, joblessness, sickness and despair. But if you call on Jesus Christ, he will calm these storms because He knows your needs," he said.
In what appeared to be a direct challenge to the local branch district, Setai called on members to remember the story of Shadrack, Meshack and Abednigo whenever storms threatened to destabilise the church.
"In every threatening storm, there is peace if you place your faith in Jesus," Setai told the congregation.
