Head-turning fashion comes to stylish close

Thula Sindi, JJ Schoeman and the streetwise Stoned Cherrie brought the Audi Joburg Autumn and Winter Fashion Week to a fashionable close on Saturday.

The four-day event at the Sandton Convention Centre had its debut last year.

Top designers such as Abigail Keats, Audrey Mokhari, David Tlale, Frans Kies, Fundudzi, Ifa Lethu, Kluk CGdT, Machere, Marianne Fassler, Maya Prass, MosewaMosa, Mzansi Designers, Siphakeme Ndlovu, Sun Goddess, Thembisile Mazibuko and Thesis and were the carte du jour.

But it was the underdog Sindi who stole the show. Unlike well-established designers such as Tlale and Sun Goddess, Sindi's designs were a presentation of craftsmanship. He poured his heart and soul into a collection of outrageous beauty. Through his tasteful designs he confirmed that he knows what women want to wear.

His designs deviated from the common trend of Afro-centrism; they communicated style and grace, the kind that could be bought off the runway. The clothes were made with good fabric and had a fresh and young look.

Those who came to see Tlale's designs left disappointed. Though he had lovely bright colours, greys and a beautiful music arrangement, there was nothing spectacular in his designs; the David Tlale factor was just not there.

For Stoned Cherrie it was the day of revival with a comeback of its modishness. Kensani Nkosi and her team presented sophistication.

Sun Goddess opted for street wear. Unfortunately their range lacked class and elegance and the Africanness they are known for. They took the show for granted and came onto the ramp with unfinished clothes. Threads could be seen hanging from the seams.

Mzansi Designers dazzled the crowds with beautiful and stylish coats. Craig Jacob's Fundudzi was a disappointment and lacked creativity.

The Sanlam SA Fashion Week takes place in Newtown on Friday and Saturday.
