Veteran actor Shimmy Mofokeng, who was gunned down near his home in Mulbarton, Johannesburg, on Monday, "sacrificed his life for his family".

His wife Letta, in a message read on her behalf, told a memorial service at Orlando Communal Hall in Soweto yesterday that her husband had saved their lives by going after the hijackers.

"Shimmy spared our lives on that tragic Monday night because after seeing the robbery next door, instead of driving into our yard, he took a different direction. I can only imagine what could have happened had he driven into the yard. He sacrificed his life for us."

Orlando councillor Vusi Nene said Mofokeng died in the "line of duty".

"He hated crime and criminals. In 1988, we both decided that something needed to be done about the escalating crime in our area. We did not want crime to claim our streets."

Mofokeng will be buried at Kroomvlei Cemetery tomorrow. The funeral service will be held at Kibler Park Recreational Centre from 9am.
