A security guard, lying in wait outside the gates of a Limpopo school on Friday, shot two pupils dead as they arrived for school.
The victims of the shootings were a male and a female pupil at Ralson Tshinanne Secondary School in Ngovhela near Thohoyandou.
The fatal shooting is believed to have been the result of a love triangle.
The suspect, 27, allegedly confronted the dead pair outside the school gates and shot them in their heads.
He later handed himself over to the police.
The male pupil, 19, died at the scene while the girl, 15, was certified dead at Tshinizini Hospital from gunshot wounds to the head.
Classes were disrupted and pupils left the school early to receive trauma counselling.
"The man suspected that his girlfriend was having an affair with a school boy," Thohoyandou police spokesman Inspector Nkanukeni Raedane said.
"He went to the school carrying a gun and shot the boy and girl who arrived at the same time."
Witnesses said they saw the suspect outside the school gates, but did not know what he was waiting for.
Sowetan has learnt that the suspect and the deceased girl had a child together.
Raedane said the suspect was found with substances believed to be drugs in his possession and is thought to have been under the influence of drugs at the time.
The alleged killer is a security guard with a private company in Thohoyandou and apparently used a 9mm service pistol.
"He will appear in the Thohoyandou magistrate's court on Monday," said Raedane.
He faces two charges of murder and possession of drugs.
