Give Modise a rest before he gets burn-out

We all firmly agreed with Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira when he stated that he would increase the pool of national team players by giving a number of youngsters a chance in the team.

We all firmly agreed with Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira when he stated that he would increase the pool of national team players by giving a number of youngsters a chance in the team.

But now my gripe is about Orlando Pirates' exciting midfielder Teko Modise, whose selection for the national side has become an issue within football circles.

There is nothing wrong with the youngster, but there is a lot wrong with Parreira.

Modise is a good and exciting player. Every coach in the Premiership would like to have him in his fold.

I, however disagree with Parreira's inclusion of the player in all the games that Bafana Bafana play in.

He played the whole Cosafa Cup games, the whole qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations, the whole group games at the Afcon itself, the national team's international friendlies and he is also a regular for Pirates.

The entire world, let alone the nation, has seen the youngster in action and everybody knows what he is capable off.

Modise is very young and needs to be rested. When the national side for tomorrow's friendly against Zimbabwe was announced last Friday, I was one of those who were amazed to see Modise's name on the team list.

Modise doesn't have to prove himself to anyone anymore. Unless the coach knows something we don't - which could be a fear of losing - and being blamed for not having anyone with Modise's influence and abilities.

But, we are going to burn this boy out before long. Modise has been used week in and week out and the poor boy may probably not be in the team for the Fifa World Cup in 2010 at the rate he is being played.

We have to bear in mind that not only does the national team need his services, Pirates need him too.

The Bucs are still in contention for the Absa Premiership championship. They also need the R10 million that goes with the winner.

Proven players such as Modise should be called up for games such as the one against Paraguay which is also on a Fifa international games' week. That would make a lot of sense.
