Mametlhake Hospital in Mpumalanga has angered the parents of a teenage boy, who saying he was discharged prematurely after being injured in a tractor accident.
Samuel Mokoena, 16, suffered a fracture below the knee in an accident in which five other people were hurt.
The youth was bandaged and given 10 tablets for pain and discharged.
Samuel's 66-year-old father, Daniel Mokoena of Vaalbank, struggled to hold back tears as he described the pain his son was going through.
"The leg is broken but, instead of putting it in a plaster cast, they bandaged it without even balancing the broken part. We cannot touch the leg, let alone move it without causing him pain.
"I can actually hear the clattering sound of broken bones whenever I try to move the leg," said Mokoena.
Speaking to Sowetan, lying face-up on a couch that has become a makeshift hospital bed, Samuel said he was wheeled into the X-ray room and then taken to another room where his leg was bandaged.
"They gave me a packet of 10 pain killers and told me to go home, but I am in terrible pain. The pain killers are no match for the pain I am feeling. This leg is killing me," he said.
Mokoena said he was told to bring his son back today so that he can be transferred to a hospital in Pretoria.
"In the meantime my son must endure the pain because I cannot take him anywhere. I cannot touch him without hurting him. I asked the doctor why he discharged a patient with a broken leg, but he said there was nothing he could do for my son," said Mokoena.
Samuel and James Modirwa, 15, Thabang Maluleke, 15, Koos Sibanyoni, 31, and Josias Aphane, 58, were injured when a Mazda sedan rammed into the tractor that was pulling a trailer on which they were passengers.
Samuel's brother, Enos, 30, who was driving the tractor, was still in hospital yesterday. The driver of the sedan did not stop.
Mpumalanga health department spokesman Mpho Gabashane confirmed the boy was treated at the hospital and is booked for an operation today.
