Gospel artist Thabiso Moloi narrowly escaped death when he was allegedly stabbed by fellow gospel musician and friend Khulekani Chili.

Moloi says he was standing outside a friend's house when an angry Chili stabbed him several times.

The incident happened on Sunday night in Kingsway, Boksburg, Gauteng, where they both live.

"I got a call at the house of one of the people I worked with on a project. It is very close to where Chili lives.

"While I was talking on the phone I felt something hitting my back. I thought somebody was hitting me with a stone, but he was stabbing me."

The Villiers-born artist was rushed to the Far East Rand Hospital in Springs. He was discharged on Wednesday.

Moloi says Chili had told his friends on Sunday morning that he wanted a gun to kill him.

He also said that Chili had a drinking problem and broken the windows of his house on a previous occasion.

"He came to my house drunk and broke windows and furniture," Moloi says. "He asked me to forgive him and I did. After that, I told him that I was distancing myself from him and he didn't like the idea."

But Chili denies that he stabbed his friend.

"I know Thabiso, but I did not stab him," Chili says. "I have not seen him for a long time."

Moloi says that he has opened a case of assault at the Brakpan police station.

Brakpan police confirm that a case has been opened.
