The Mangosuthu University of Technology at Umlazi in Durban would be officially closed from today until a solution to end a strike there is found.

Management said in circular yesterday that the university would be closed if students failed to return to the lecture halls by midday.

The students vowed not to return to lectures until their demands were met. Management closed the university after a protest by students yesterday turned violent.

Rubber bullets were fired at the protesting students as the disruptions continued for the second day. Students boycotted lectures on Tuesday over, among other the shortage of lecturers and poorly equipped laboratories.

Meanwhile, lectures at the Vaal University of Technology's Vanderbijlpark campus are back to normal after a one-day boycott by the students. - Sne Masuku
