Discipline these taxi drivers

Taxi drivers are a law unto themselves but this cannot be allowed to continue unchecked.

Taxi drivers are a law unto themselves but this cannot be allowed to continue unchecked.

Taxi operators need discipline. They need serious sanctions on their unlawful behaviour, or they will find that more and more people will begin to use the bus services, especially if those continue to improve as they have been.

This driving wherever they feel like it, acting however they please, has to stop, especially before the Soccer World Cup. Such a taxi clean-up could start in the city centre where traffic is congested and space is minimal.

Taxis could be restricted to certain streets such as Von Wielligh, much like Eloff is a bus-only lane after Marshall. Motorists could then stay off that road to avoid frustration. In particular, in the interests of keeping traffic free flowing, taxis should be prevented from using Rissik Street as it is an offramp from the M2 and cuts right through the heart of the city. Taxis make life very difficult when they stop illegally and block others from passing.

Also, the city centre could be a great classroom, especially if the municipality gathered enough guts to start prosecuting those that think they are above the law.

We need to be proactive in dealing with taxi operators or we are going to be held hostage when 2010 rolls around.
