The annual total consumption of South African households is estimated at R700billion, a Statistics South Africa survey said yesterday.

The results of the latest Income and Expenditure Survey, conducted in September 2005 to August 2006, estimated that R56152 was the average total consumption expenditure per household.

The survey is published every five years. The last one was in 2000.

On average, each South African household is estimated to have spent approximately R13245 on housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels during the survey year.

The second largest contributor to consumption expenditure was transport contributing 19,9percent to the total household consumption expenditure.

One rand out of every R5 spent by households on consumption expenditure was on transport.

On average, a typical household spent approximately R11180 on transport.
