There were more deserving winners

Last Friday I watched in disbelief as the organisers of the Stars of Mzansi Awards disgraced themselves in front of the country. What's with actor Menzi Ngubane scooping the most prized award (R1m), instead of World Cup rugby star Bryan Habana?

No disrespect to Ngubane, but do we need reminding who Habana is? For the record, he is the reigning IRB World Player of the Year; he equalled the record for the most tries in a tournament, held by the mighty Jonah Lomu; scored the last-minute try that made the Blue Bulls the first South African rugby team to win Super 14 last year. Somebody scream Soweto Gospel Choir! Remember them? They are the Grammy Award winners two years in a row. Surprisingly, they were nowhere to be seen when "their most deserving" award was presented to another musician.

Shame on the organisers.
