Angry members of the community at Ga-Mampuru near Lebowakgomo in Limpopo have stoned to death a man who had just been released from prison after serving 13 years for murder.
John Makola had been in prison since 1995 for killing his mother.
Soon after his release on Monday Makola went home but found that his family had moved to another village.
He found a new family living in his old home and allegedly started a fight with them.
According to witnesses, he allegedly tried to force the family out, claiming the house belonged to his family.
The "new" family called their neighbours to help them beat off Makola, who was said to have threatened to kill them if they did not leave the property.
"He was allegedly stoned to death by the angry community," said police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba yesterday.
Ramatseba said police found large stones next to Makola's lifeless body when they arrived.
In a separate incident yesterday, a 36-year old would-be rapist, Mafombo Mushiane, of Venda near Thohoyandou, was also allegedly stoned to death by members of the community who found him trying to rape an 18-year-old girl.
Police said Mushiane broke down the door where the girl was sleeping and forced her to undress.
The girl shouted for help and neighbours found Mushiane on top of her, trying to rape her.
The neighbours were joined by other members of the community, who assaulted Makola until he lost consciousness.
Police were called to the scene and he was rushed to the local hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival.
Ramatseba said it was never acceptable for people to take the law into their own hands. He asked for calm to prevail when citizens uncover a crime of any kind.
He urged communities to always report crime to the police and not to resort to vigilante justice.
Ramatseba police were investigating both incidents.
