Gunners, Reds, Barca through

Manchester United qualified for the quarterfinals of the Champions League following a hard fought 1-0 win over Lyon of France at Old Trafford last night.

Manchester United qualified for the quarterfinals of the Champions League following a hard fought 1-0 win over Lyon of France at Old Trafford last night.

The golden striker Cristiano Ronaldo scored the all-important goal in the 40th minute with a long range shot, netting his 30th goal of the season.

United are through on a 2-1 aggregate score.

In Italy, AC Milan's hopes of defending their title went up in smoke after suffering a 2-0 defeat by English giants Arsenal.

Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor scored for the two goals.

Arsenal are through 2-0 on aggregate after the sides drew 0-0 in the first leg in London two weeks ago.

Milan, who had Kaka back from injury, threatened occasionally but continue to look a shadow of last season's side.

In Spain, Barcelona eased into the quarter-finals after a quickfire strike from Hernandez Xavi earned a 1-0 win over Celtic.

Xavi put a rapid end to Celtic's hopes of causing an upset when he steered the ball in at the near post after Silvinho had latched on to a cleverly-disguised pass from Ronaldinho.

Barca, who won the first leg 3-2, had a host of chances to extend their lead, but keeper Artur Boruc pulled off fine saves. - Reuters
