Four-club tourney sets the scene

Mozambique's Costa De Sol and Petro Athletico of Angola will be part of a new tournament in Mpumalanga later this month to create awareness of the 2010 World Cup.

The tournament, which is organised by the Mpumalanga provincial government, will take place at Thulamahashe Stadium on March 22.

The organisers have also roped in Black Leopards, with Swaziland giants Mbabane Highlanders also coming on board.

Costa De Sol and Petro Athletico, who are some of the top clubs in southern Africa, are involved in the MTN African Champions League.

Initially, the plan was to include a top Bundesliga club as part of a cooperation agreement with the German government.

The Germans, who hosted the 2006 World Cup, are already in Mpumalanga helping out in the preparations for the tournament. The plan was put on hold as the Bundesliga has reached crunch time with the challenge for the championship title and the relegation dogfight intensifying.

The Mpumalanga 2010 World Cup office is expected to call a media briefing later this week where an announcement regarding the four-club tournament will be made.

As part of the bidding pledge by the Local Organising Committee to make the 2010 World Cup an African event, Mpumalanga has roped in Swaziland and Mozambique.

Jabu Mahlangu, MEC for sports, arts and recreation, said they were ironing out the finer details.
