The horror death toll on South Africa's roads since Friday has turned our routes into the bloodiest in years.

The horror death toll on South Africa's roads since Friday has turned our routes into the bloodiest in years.

Nearly 100 people have perished in five days in accidents throughout the country. This is shocking.

KwaZulu-Natal accounted for most of the fatalities.

Many reasons have been cited for the carnage, but these accidents are mostly caused by human beings.

The main causes are drunken driving, speeding, fatigue, impatience and the recklessness displayed by rude and uncaring drivers.

There are also many people driving without valid drivers' licences.

Most drivers show no respect for other motorists and blatantly ignore road safety rules.

The latest accidents should surely ring alarm bells about what to expect during the Easter weekend.

Traffic authorities must move swiftly and apply stringent measures to stop the carnage that has claimed the lives of so many men, women and children.

Officials must crack down on drunk and reckless drivers by being visible at all times along busy routes.

Culprits who transgress road safety rules should be severely dealt with.

The authorities must stop this hell on our roads and protect law-abiding motorists and passengers.

Enough blood has been spilt on our roads. This must stop.
