Act now against dealers of killer booze and drugs

I want to congratulate Sowetan for taking an active stand against child abuse, teenage alcoholism and drug abuse by exposing the "joints" in the Johannesburg CBD, (Boozing teens with no care in world, in Sowetan on March 3).

Bravo to the journalists who write these stories. We need more journalists who have the concerns of the nation at heart and expose these bad activities.

Now it is up to the parents of those children who roam around to take time off to march to the provincial Metro police and Liquor Board for not enforcing by-laws.

What I cannot understand is how can they issue liquor licences to places which in some cases are situated right next to schools. Why are the Metro police not patrolling these areas because they know what is happening?

No matter how much Sowetan exposes these establishments, which are then closed down, they just move to another building and open their businesses under another name. The Liquor Board should be aware of the people who are destroying our kids and refuse them licences.

We saw how the women marched to the Noord Street taxi rank in miniskirts. That was brave of them and I applaud their action. Parents should be ashamed of what their children are doing and not taking any action, especially now that they read it in the newspapers.

Ntozakhele Lucas,

Johannesburg
